Health Promotion

Enjoying good health is not just about the absence of disease or being physically healthy. It is about the holistic health of the whole person, within their family, work and social environments. Health Promotion is about encouraging people to reach their full potential, physically, socially and emotionally. It includes actions to ensure that  social, economic and environmental conditions are as good as they can be to help people achieve their full potential.

Nillumbik Community Health Service (NCHS) works on many levels such as prevention, education, skill development and building the capacity of the community to promote health. Some of our activities include;

  • Immunisation services

  • Supporting individuals to participate in physical activity via walking groups and the Walking School Bus program

  • Providing information to individuals and carers on how to better manage their health

  • Running programs to increase the skills of individuals.  Programs have included Assertiveness training, Parenting Courses, Dealing with Depression and Stress

  • Providing forums for community members to meet socialize and establish connections with others.  For example, New Parents Groups and Diabetes Support Groups.

  • There are also self-help networks associated with Nillumbik Community Health Service which exist to provide moral and social support to people recovering from illness.

Behind the scenes, our staff work hard to plan new services, to understand the need for services and to ensure that existing services are delivered in the best possible way. This kind of work aims to change the environment for promoting health by changing the way in which services are delivered or by ensuring cooperation between different service providers.

We value the opinions and knowledge of clients. If you would like to become involved in planning, implementing or monitoring our services, or you would just like to express your opinions about health related matters please contact the Manager of Health Promotion
