Rosemary Aitken

Rosemary Aitken (Deputy Chairperson)

Concern that young families and disadvantaged individuals needed more local support led to Rosemary campaigning for health and welfare services in the early 1970s. The Shire of Eltham responded to a large public meeting by employing a part time welfare officer in addition to the Infant Welfare Nurses (Maternal Child Health), and setting up Family Day Care for children.
A Commonwealth Government grant to establish a Community Health Centre in the mid 1970s led to the employment of health personnel, and the present Nillumbik Community Health Service.
Rosemary has served on the Advisory and Management Boards of the Nillumbik Community Health Service since its inception, and has served in the role of President from 1988-2004. In addition, Rosemary has worked as a Physiotherapist, and has completed an economics degree at La Trobe University to further her understanding of health planning and management.
Rosemary was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the community through health and welfare organisations in the Eltham district in 2008. In 2010 Rosemary won the 2010 Minister for Health Awards for outstanding individual achievement from a primary health service. The Minister for Health Volunteer Awards celebrate and honour the remarkable work performed by volunteers across Victoria's public healthcare sector.
